Let’s take a trip to the Colorado State Fair’s fine arts competition, and in particular the ‘digitally manipulated photography’ category, where an entry from jason allen took the top prize.

Given the opportunity, what would AI spend a $300 prize on? Maybe one day we’ll find out, but for now the prize still ends in human hands - even though the work was heavily created by machines. ‘Théâtre D’opéra Spatial’ was a entry submitted by a contestant at the Colorado State Fair, and was generated with the help of the popular text-to-image tool MidJourney.

Perhaps inevitably, the news was met with a fierce backlash from artists who accused him of, essentially, cheating. Allen’s view, on the other hand, is that AI “is a tool, just like the paintbrush is a tool. Without the person, there is no creative force.” Where you stand is your call, but it’s hard to question whether this is the start of AI celebration, and whether, as a cost, it also means the end of traditional human craft.

AI is not a new creation, and whilst many attempts have previously been made, this Cosmopolitan release in 2022 was the first effort to (in their own words) “go the whole nine yards”. The world’s first artificially intelligent magazine cover was the brainchild of 6 women on a Zoom call, with the help of DALL-E 2, and was more or less wrapped up within the hour.

Everyone said art will be the last thing achievable by AI because creativity is a very human feature. Turns out it's the first thing AI perfected.

Oh really? Let's see about that...

Stop calling it artwork. It’s not art and there was no work. It’s just a computer generated image, nothing more.
